Scott Pelley Fired from CBS News’ “60 Minutes”
Veteran correspondent Scott Pelley was dismissed from CBS’s long-running “60 Minutes” on Tuesday after an intense confrontation with the show’s new executive producer, Nick Bilton, and editor-in-chief Bari Weiss.
Bilton addressed the situation in a memo, expressing his disappointment over what he described as an “astonishing disrespect” during a recent meeting. He emphasized the need for respectful discussion and collaboration, critiquing Pelley for his conduct and lack of interest in the future of the program.
In the memo, Bilton stated, “Your hostility was evident in front of your staff. This behavior indicates that you’re not aligned with the goals we have for the program. Therefore, I’m informing you that your employment is terminated effective immediately.”
Following Pelley’s termination, Bilton communicated to the rest of the “60 Minutes” staff, acknowledging the significant impact Pelley had on many and expressing regret that the situation interrupted important discussions about the upcoming season. He promised unwavering support for the staff moving forward.
Pelley, who previously served in combat zones as a journalist, expressed his frustrations during a staff meeting, openly criticizing Berthon and Weiss, whom he accused of ruining the iconic newsmagazine.
Reports indicated that Pelley was particularly upset about a recent series of firings within the program, describing the day as “Black Thursday.” He had been with CBS since 1989 and spent years as an anchor and correspondent, making his dismissal quite notable within the network.
This shakeup comes amid a broader transition at CBS following the merger with Skydance Media and has raised concerns about editorial independence. Pelley had been vocal about tensions at the company, including political influence over reporting.
The changes at “60 Minutes” seem to reflect ongoing shifts in leadership and approach within CBS News, as the network redefines itself under new management.
While some prominent correspondents continue with the show, the dynamics and direction are evidently in flux, leaving many questions about the future of this storied program.
