Scott Wiener addresses concerns regarding women's safety in women-only areas

Town Hall Confrontation on Transgender Policies

At a recent town hall event, a California senator, seen as a potential successor to Nancy Pelosi, found himself at the center of a heated discussion regarding transgender policies and concerns over women’s safety.

Democratic Representative Scott Wiener was addressing questions when musician Tish Hyman entered the conversation. She raised alarm over rules permitting transgender women to access women’s spaces, like locker rooms. Hyman, a lesbian, shared her personal experience: “I was attacked this week in the women’s locker room at Gold’s Gym by a self-identified trans woman with a history of domestic violence,” she said, expressing her fears about the safety of women in these environments.

She pressed Wiener on what he would offer as reassurance to women uneasy about men identifying as women in women-only spaces.

Weiner responded, emphasizing the importance of safety for everyone involved. “We want everyone to be safe,” he stated, later adding, “So trans women are women too.”

Hyman acknowledged Wiener’s legislative efforts while insisting that he should take these concerns seriously. “I’m telling you right now that millions of women across America are being harassed and sexually assaulted in locker rooms,” she said, clarifying that her views weren’t rooted in homophobia or transphobia but rather a concern for women and children. “Many of the bills you passed are dangerous,” she stressed.

As the conversation unfolded, Hyman asserted, “Women and trans women are different,” prompting some audience members to counter, “Trans women are women.”

In closing, Wiener thanked Hyman for sharing her views. “I appreciate your perspective…we need to keep all women safe,” he said, aiming to pivot towards a more unified stance. The discussion highlighted the complexities surrounding this issue, reflecting the varied opinions and emotions surrounding women’s rights and transgender rights today.
