California Senator Launches Congressional Campaign
California Senator Scott Wiener has officially kicked off his campaign for Congress, aiming to represent San Francisco. He frames this bid as a crucial effort to defend democracy and civil rights, warning that the nation is “descending to fascism.”
Wiener, a Democrat serving San Francisco in the state legislature, shared his announcement on social media, declaring, “It’s official. I’m running for Congress to represent San Francisco!”
In a campaign video, he reflected on his family’s escape from fascism in Europe, expressing disbelief at the current political climate. “San Francisco has always stood on the right side of history, supporting democracy and civil rights during tough times,” he emphasized. “I’m Scott Wiener, and I’m running for Congress to protect our city, our values, and our Constitution.”
The announcement is part of Wiener’s strategy to challenge long-time House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. At 85, she has yet to confirm whether she will run for re-election, and Wiener’s campaign comes amid a changing political landscape in San Francisco. Pelosi is also facing competition from Saikat Chakrabarti, former chief of staff to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
In his campaign message, Wiener committed to combating the Trump administration’s policies and working towards a better future for the city and nation. He highlighted his history in areas like housing, health care, clean energy, and civil rights, asserting, “I’ve made contributions in the past, and I will do it again.”
His campaign video showcases his legislative achievements as well. “I have stood up to violence and hate throughout my life,” he stated. “Trump and his MAGA extremists don’t frighten me. They won’t deter me or the people of our city from doing what’s right. I will continue to hold insurance companies accountable, ensure families receive necessary health care, and protect LGBTQ youth and their homes. I’ve even pushed for a law removing ICE agents’ ability to conceal their identities, and I’m committed to increasing housing availability to foster a more inclusive city.”
Wiener’s work in the state Legislature has drawn national attention. He has championed several controversial bills, such as making California a “sanctuary state” for minors pursuing gender reassignment and decriminalizing certain loitering laws, which subsequently impacted street conditions. He also sponsored SB 79, promoting high-rise developments near public transport despite local zoning laws.
Wiener has been vocal against the Trump administration, denouncing the growth of detention facilities as indicative of a “fascist police state” and criticizing ICE practices.
In a recent incident following the death of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, Wiener expressed sympathy for those displeased with Kirk, labeling him a “sneaky bigot.” This comment drew backlash, with some accusing him of using Kirk’s assassination for self-promotion.
In a closing message, Wiener rallied voters to support his campaign, stating, “We can’t ask for more from our elected officials. Join us now before we lose everything we stand for.”
