Scottie Scheffler Addresses Team Event Frustrations

Scottie Scheffler recently opened up about a particular frustration he and his fellow American players have faced during team events, and interestingly, it doesn’t relate directly to the events themselves.

Currently at Medinah Country Club in Illinois for the Presidents Cup, the 30-year-old golfer expressed his annoyance with certain narratives that have emerged from the Ryder Cup, another team golf event. “I think that’s probably been frustrating for us as American players,” the world’s top-ranked golfer mentioned to reporters. He elaborated on how false rumors and stories, like Patrick Cantlay’s hat situation or claims of discord within the team, have made things difficult. “It’s very much untrue,” he insisted, highlighting the impact of misinformation.

He reflected, “When I think about that kind of stuff, I find that I’m usually at my best when I’m not caught up in all that.”

Scheffler specifically referred to the controversy surrounding Cantlay during the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, where a report suggested he avoided wearing the Team USA hat as a protest over the compensation issue for American players. This report implied a split within the locker room, which Scheffler seems to think only adds to the team’s frustrations.

This topic lingered in the background as Cantlay addressed it again in 2025, just ahead of the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. “I’ve said a million times, the hat didn’t fit last [Ryder Cup], and this year we worked with them to make sure we had one, and we got one, so we’re good,” Cantlay clarified.

However, during the initial two days of the previous Ryder Cup, the Americans struggled significantly against the Europeans, contributing to the ongoing narratives and frustrations among the players.
