Scottie Scheffler returned to the PGA Championship in time for his second round tee time following his shocking arrest Friday morning.
He returned to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville at 9:13 a.m. and was scheduled to tee off at 10:08 a.m.
“I love you, Marty,” Scheffler told ESPN reporter Marty Smith as he entered the course.
Mr. Scheffler was taken into custody by police at around 5:45 a.m. due to a traffic mix-up and later taken to jail.
He was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, criminal mischief and reckless driving.
Originally scheduled to tee off at 8:48 a.m., play was postponed for an hour and 20 minutes due to a fatal accident.
Scheffler was attempting to enter the course to avoid traffic caused by the accident and begin preparations for the second round, but was stopped by police and the situation quickly escalated.
ESPN’s Jeff Darlington witnessed the incident himself as he entered the course.
“Scheffler was then walked to a patrol car and handcuffed behind his back. I was very surprised by what happened. He looked at me, who was handcuffed, and said, ‘Please help me.’ . He had no idea what was going on in the situation. Things moved very quickly, very quickly, very aggressively,” Darlington said Friday on “SportsCenter.”
“He was held in that police vehicle for about 20 minutes. The police officer at that point had no idea that Scotty Scheffler was a tournament golfer and of course that he was the No. 1 player in the world. I didn’t understand.”
Schaeffler started the tournament with a 4-under 67, leaving him five shots behind leader Xander Schauffele.
