Scotty Scheffler’s Strong Start at the Open
Portrush, Northern Ireland – Just a couple of days after sharing some profound thoughts about life during a pre-tournament press conference, Scotty Scheffler, currently ranked No. 1 in the world, kicked off the UK’s Open with a 3-under 68 in the first round.
Once he wrapped up the round, Scheffler found himself one shot off the lead thanks to birdies on holes 16 and 17.
After finishing, a reporter playfully poked fun at Scheffler regarding his capability to shoot under par, despite struggling with fairway accuracy.
“Yeah, you’re the second person to mention that to me,” Scheffler replied. “I’m not sure what you’re seeing. When it’s raining next to you, it might seem believable or not, but getting the ball onto the fairway isn’t exactly easy.”
Despite the challenging conditions, Scheffler was pleased. He mentioned, “At 3-under, I felt like I hit the ball poorly off the tee, but honestly, my only real disappointment was on the second hole. Other than that, I had a lot of solid tee shots, so I feel pretty confident going into the next few rounds.”
He ended the round trailing only a few others, including Matthew Fitzpatrick and Haotong Lee.
Interestingly, about half of Scheffler’s round was played in the rain. He acknowledged the difficulties that posed, saying, “The wind clearly challenges links golf, but rain adds another layer of difficulty, especially when teeing off. It creates a bit of moisture between the club face and the ball, particularly with long clubs, making it quite challenging.”
Scheffler, who secured a major championship earlier this year at the PGA, was questioned about his round amid comments on golf’s recent popularity.
“I’m just trying to be candid with you all,” he noted. “Sometimes I feel like I might not be as straightforward. Perhaps I should pick my words more carefully.”
He added, “It all comes down to perspective. Other players have come up to me saying they feel the same way. If anyone disagrees, they haven’t confronted me about it directly yet, so I’m a bit unsure about the reactions.”
Notably, Shane Lowry, the winner when the Open was last held at Portrush, joined Scheffler in the group alongside 2021 champion Collin Morikawa.
After a successful day, Lowry expressed admiration for Scheffler’s performance, stating, “We had a great time out there.”
