Scottie Scheffler’s Streak Comes to an End
For nearly four years, death, taxes, and the steady income of Scottie Scheffler felt like certainties. That was until Friday.
In a surprising turn of events, Scheffler missed the cut at the Scottish Open, marking the first time he’s done so since the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship. This unfortunate outcome ended his impressive streak of 78 consecutive cuts, which was the longest since Tiger Woods set a remarkable record of 142 cuts from February 1998 to May 2005.
After a 2-over 72 on Friday, Scheffler found himself two strokes short of the cut line, finishing the tournament at even par. The 30-year-old golfer was open about his performance.
“I didn’t get off to a great start, and after that I felt like I lost focus,” Scheffler noted. “That’s how you end up above average.” His missed opportunity included a 6-foot par putt on the par-3 ninth, ultimately tying him for 88th place.
Interestingly, while the top 65 and ties were announced only after the second round, it certainly added to the tension. Scheffler had started the day just three strokes behind the leader but faced difficulties, especially with his putting.
Now, Scheffler is eager to move on as he gears up to defend his title at the upcoming British Open Championship. Taking place at Birkdale, he’s not actually playing that links course yet.
Reflecting on his recent experience, he said, “It was a bit different than I had planned. I’ll need to think carefully about how to get down to Birkdale.” In light of his recent struggles, it’s clear that improvement will be necessary as he prepares for his next challenge.
