Scottie Scheffler Gears Up for the U.S. Open
As the U.S. Open approaches later this month, Scottie Scheffler is getting ready. The top golfer in the world has shared his insights on Sinek Hills Golf Club ahead of the Memorial Tournament this weekend.
“It was my first time, and honestly, it was pretty much what I expected,” Scheffler mentioned to reporters on Wednesday. “I’d heard chatter about the greens being tricky, and I was a bit taken aback by how wide the fairways were. However, the challenging green complex is definitely the main hurdle here.”
Shinnecock Hills had a reputation for testing golfers when it hosted the 2018 U.S. Open. That year, no player managed to finish under par, with Brooks Koepka winning the major by finishing 1 over par.
“The rough was also a significant penalty, especially considering its width,” Scheffler remarked regarding the Southampton course. “If you miss the fairway, you’re pretty much in trouble. But the fairway itself is forgiving enough to keep you in the game. They can really place the pin anywhere they want, and with a complex as tough as this, scores can soar.”
Having claimed four major titles, Scheffler is on a quest to join the elite group of golfers who have achieved a career Grand Slam by winning the U.S. Open.
He’s already notched up two Masters victories along with a PGA and British Open Championship, all within the past year. Yet, by his own standards, it feels like quite a while since Scheffler found himself back in the winner’s circle.
Even though he’s been playing almost weekly, he hasn’t secured a win since the American Express event in late January. In the time since, he’s finished in the top five six times, including three separate second-place finishes not long ago.
