Scottie Scheffler launches putter in air after missing putt amid frustrating round

The Pinehurst No. 2 is not making any friends at the U.S. Open this weekend, and Scottie Scheffler doesn’t seem to be much of a fan either.

The course’s greens have been much talked about as being in abnormal condition, with Scheffler being one of the victims.

The reigning Masters champion drilled a 17-foot putt to save par on the par-3 15th hole and looked to be on track until the final moments when a right-to-left break took the amateur side.

Scheffler missed, tossed the putter into the air, and it did a 540-degree turn before landing hard on the green.

Scheffler made par on the first five holes of the day (starting with the back nine), but bogeyed the 17th hole (8th) and double bogeyed the 5th hole (14th).

In the end, Scheffler couldn’t add a single stroke to his scorecard, finishing with a four-over 74, without a birdie in the entire round.

Scheffler is currently one stroke off the projected cut line (the cut line for the U.S. Open is outside the top 60), so he will need help from players currently on the course to get through the weekend.

Scheffler is the No. 1 golfer in the world for good reason: With five wins already this season, including The Players Championship and the Memorial Championship, he was the overwhelming favorite to win his third major championship this year.

Perhaps Scheffler’s biggest story this year was his arrest just hours before the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla, though all charges were later dropped.
