Scheffler Comments on Crowds After Clark’s US Open Win
“Being in the arena isn’t good for anyone,” Scottie Scheffler remarked following Windham Clark’s victory at the US Open in Southampton, where he faced some hostile spectators.
In the final round against Clark, Scheffler, who aimed for a career Grand Slam, addressed the challenging atmosphere at Sinek Hills, noting that some attendees had been forced off the course due to rowdy behavior.
“The crowd was difficult today. New Yorkers, they’re tough,” he said post-match. “It was great to see so many fans there, and I always appreciate the cheers for me.”
“But, you know, sometimes it can get overwhelming. Like, when the ball is just about to roll off the green and you start hearing cheers—I think that felt a bit much,” Scheffler added.
“At the end of the day, you can’t control how fans behave. Being in that situation is tricky for anyone. I’ve faced supportive audiences in my career, as well as those who have been pretty tough on me.” He continued, praising Clark for managing both the golf course and the crowd effectively, stating, “He really deserves to be a champion.”
Clark faced ongoing heckling throughout the final round, with a young fan even shouting “don’t choke” at him on the fourth hole before being removed by security.
After securing the win, Clark expressed understanding of his fans’ frustrations regarding his past performance. “I know why some people feel the way they do about me,” he explained.
“New York didn’t really like me,” he admitted during the trophy presentation. “I love you guys, but I get it. Some of it was my own doing.”
Clark reflected on his regrettable past actions, particularly an incident that led to a suspension from Oakmont for damaging locker rooms at the 2025 US Open. He missed the cut by just one stroke and took his frustration out on several objects.
After publicly apologizing, offering compensation, donating to charity, and completing anger management, the 32-year-old was reinstated.
In a heartfelt moment, his father, Randall, surprised him by flying in from Denver, leading to an emotional embrace as they celebrated Father’s Day together.
