Scottie Scheffler secures the US PGA title as competitors slip back.

It was another Scotty Sunday, marking a significant moment for Scotty Schaeffler as he continues his journey in the world of golf. This major win marks the first time a player has triumphed outside Augusta National. A year ago, Schaeffler faced a different ordeal, landing in a police cell during his quest for the Wanamaker trophy. Fast forward to now, and while John Rahm struggled, Schaeffler managed to shine. He didn’t let the pressure get to him.

With earnings of $3.4 million, Schaeffler is firmly at the top of the world rankings. What makes him stand out is his authenticity; he doesn’t put on a show. This is a golfer who confidently faced the final hole with a lead of 6, 5, and 4 shots—an impressive feat that reflects his poise under pressure.

The second major being held at Quail Hollow had its share of criticisms, given that it hosts PGA Tour events regularly. Some felt the tournament lacked distinction, but Schaeffler certainly proved otherwise. This victory marked his 15th win since early 2022, and it had felt like a long stretch since his last one at Byron Nelson earlier this month.

This US PGA Sunday was filled with its share of drama. Starting the final round with a three-shot lead, Schaeffler quickly extended that to five. It felt like a smooth ride until Rahm made things interesting with birdies on the 8th and 10th holes, closing the gap to two shots. Rahm was looking to prove that his decision to switch to Liv golf hadn’t dulled his capabilities and aimed to be the first Spaniard to win a US PGA. After Schaeffler bogeyed on the 9th and Rahm birdied the 11th, they were tied. However, Rahm had an impressive 13 putts in 11 holes, whereas Schaeffler struggled to find greens during the front nine.

Nonetheless, Schaeffler regained control of the tournament. Doubts about his ability to stabilize were uncalled for. With birdies on the 10th and 14th, he found himself back in command. A hiccup on the 16th allowed Rahm to narrow the margin yet again, but when Rahm found trouble on the 17th, things shifted dramatically. Schaeffler, despite hitting a fairway bunker, managed to stay out in front. Rahm ultimately finished with a score of 73, quite a contrast to Schaeffler’s success, as he ended up seven shots behind.

The day held its mix of highs and lows for players like Bryson DeChambeau, who shot a 70 but struggled with his wedge play, expressing disappointment despite recognizing Schaeffler’s standout performance. Harris English made a significant leap with a great finish of 65, positioning himself well on the leaderboard.

As for Rory McIlroy, his week concluded with a modest 72, a reminder of the high stakes after the emotions at Augusta. Sergio Garcia, with a score of 69, spoke about his intentions to show improvement before the Ryder Cup selection. He acknowledged the need to elevate his game to contribute effectively to the team, which he felt optimistic about, given the months ahead.

Despite his own challenges, Garcia witnessed Rahm’s attempt to carve out history for Spain. While Rahm didn’t secure the win, the excitement he brought to the tournament was noteworthy. Schaeffler’s growing list of major titles continues to expand, marking a phenomenal chapter in his golf journey.
