Scotty Scheffler Wins PGA Championship
In a significant moment in his career, Scotty Scheffler finally laid claim to the Wanamaker Trophy, marking a pivotal achievement for him.
Scheffler faced tough competition from John Rahm but ultimately triumphed over JT Poston and Bryson DeChambeau at the PGA Championship on Sunday. Previously, he had four top-five finishes but had struggled in 2022, missing the cut entirely.
Despite a tumultuous past, including an arrest that saw him in jail the previous year, Scheffler turned the situation around brilliantly, finishing the tournament at 11 under par. He started five strokes behind Jonattan Vegas but made a strong comeback with a second-round score of 68.
During the third round, he really began to assert himself. Many top players faltered, while Scheffler managed to score eagles on holes 14 and 7 and carded a fantastic 65, propelling him to the top of the leaderboard.
His wife, Meredith, expressed her pride as he came over to greet her after his remarkable performance.
In the final round, he maintained a strong pace, showcasing his skills once again.
Scheffler had four birdies but also faced challenges, recording three bogeys on the front nine. Still, he managed to get birdies on holes 2, 10, 14, and 15.
Rahm closed in on Scheffler early in the round, having shot a 67 in the third round and making three birdies in the first 11 holes. Nevertheless, he struggled to keep up, finishing with only one birdie after that.
At one point, Rahm’s attempt to birdie on the 16th hole fell short, keeping him two strokes behind Scheffler, while a double bogey on 17 further widened the gap.
DeChambeau, Harris English, and Davis Riley finished tied for second at six under par. Notably, DeChambeau had also been a runner-up in the previous year’s Championship.
JT Poston ended the tournament tied for fifth alongside Vegas and Taylor Pendrith. Meanwhile, last year’s champion, Xander Schauffele, placed 28th.
