The golfer had struggled with depression and alcoholism in the past but appeared to have reached a turning point in his life before his death.

Scheffler and Murray met earlier this year, with the latter trying to get his fiancée to be more involved with players’ wives. The Guardian reported..

At the memorial, Scheffler spoke about playing a nine-hole practice round with Murray at The Players Championship.

“I’ll never forget the look on his face when I handed him $100 on the ninth green, because that smile never left his face,” Scheffler said. “He loved being inside the ropes, for sure.”

According to the Guardian, Scheffler was seen crying and resting his head on his wife’s shoulder as he came down from the podium.

Scheffler also described Murray as a “kind person.”

Murray’s parents, siblings and fiancé were not in attendance.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan also spoke during the memorial, saying the entire tour will be “carrying this with heavy hearts for a long time to come.”

Murray died on May 25 after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Challenge the day before due to what was initially described as an illness.

The day after Murray’s death, his parents released a statement revealing that he had taken his own life.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement. “It’s surreal that we have to admit this not only to ourselves but to the world. It’s a nightmare.”

Murray won the Sony Open as a rookie in January 2017 and also won the Barbasol Championship.
