Efforts to Cool Tensions at Ryder Cup
Ted Scott and Francesco Morinari are working to ease the atmosphere surrounding their rider cups.
After a heated moment during Saturday’s match, Scotty Schaeffler’s caddy Scott issued an apology via video on Instagram, addressing Morinari, Team Europe’s associate captain.
“I’m here with Francesco Morinari. He’s always been a really nice guy,” Scott explained while standing next to him. “There was a tense moment yesterday, but I think by the time they left the 16th tee, everything was alright.”
Scott added, “We want to let the players just perform. And honestly, Team Europe is really putting the pressure on us. Today, we’re hoping to level the playing field a bit, give the fans some excitement.”
Morinari responded appreciatively, saying, “Thank you. I really have a lot of respect for you and I appreciate it.”
Tempers flared during the match involving Schaeffler and Bryson DeChambeau against Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood. Rose was setting up his putts on the 15th green when DeChambeau’s caddy crossed in front of him. After both players made successful putts, Fleetwood directed a remark at DeChambeau as they made their way off the green.
As they continued toward the 16th green, Morinari placed a hand on Scott’s shoulder and called out to him in Italian, trying to lighten the mood.
Meanwhile, both DeChambeau and Scheffler declined to engage with reporters afterward. Notably, DeChambeau reportedly told a reporter from Golf Channel to leave him alone.
Reflecting on the situation, Rose mentioned, “I was just about to hit my putt and felt like they were taking a little too long. I think I might have come off a bit pushy when I asked them to move. It was never intended to be rude, but maybe I didn’t express it the best way.”
He added, “It’s unfortunate things got to that point because it was a really exciting match.”
As it stands, Team Europe leads 15-13 in the Ryder Cup.
