The Supreme Court announced Monday that it will consider the topic of “ghost guns” and an appeal brought by the Biden administration to regulate self-assembled weapon kits like other types of firearms.

Firearms whose components are purchased online and assembled without a tracking serial number are called ghost guns.
A 2022 regulation from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) states that sales of weapon kits require background checks and serialization of parts for law enforcement tracking. was overturned by the Fifth Circuit.th Circuit Court of Appeals.
In April 2022, President Joe Biden announced new regulations during a White House event held in the Rose Garden.
“They’re calling the rules that I’m about to announce extreme,” Biden said at an event in the White House Rose Garden. “But let’s ask, ‘Is it extreme to protect police officers? Is it extreme to protect children? Is it extreme to keep guns out of the hands of people who can’t even pass a background check?’ .”
The high court will not hear the case until the fall.
In August 2023, the Supreme Court issued an injunction reinstating federal regulations on ghost weapons. The move postponed the Justice Department’s appeals against the five countries.th The case went to circuit court and overturned a federal judge’s decision in Texas to overturn the rule. The Texas judge’s decision was later upheld by five main judges.th circuit.
However, the Supreme Court upheld the regulation, although a legal challenge is pending.
The use of ghost guns has exploded in recent years as they have become easier to order online and can be assembled in minutes.
According to the Federal Register, 1,758 ghost weapons were discovered by law enforcement in 2016. However, 19,344 ghost weapons were discovered by police in 2021, almost twice as many as in 2020.
