Arch Manning’s First Start: A Mix of Hopes and Reality
Not too long ago, Arch Manning was considered one of the standout high school athletes in the country. With his well-known surname, he chose to take his talents to Austin.
After spending his first two years at Texas as a backup to Quinn Ewers, Manning finally stepped into the role of full-time starter last weekend. His debut didn’t exactly go as planned; the team lost to Ohio State, 14-7. Manning recorded 170 passing yards, along with one touchdown and one interception.
It’s reported that numerous NFL scouts were present to evaluate him, particularly with next year’s draft in mind.
Manning’s showing led to mixed reactions; one scout admitted to finding it tough to watch. “Honestly, it was a bit hard to follow,” the scout mentioned, noting the overwhelming expectations Manning faces. “You have to realize, with that kind of hype, it’s almost impossible for him to meet those standards. Though, I did think he had some better moments.”
As the 2025 season kicked off, excitement around Manning, who is the nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli Manning, grew intensely. Some scouts feel the pressure of the hype might have hindered his performance.
Another reviewer took a more positive stance, acknowledging the challenges posed by Ohio State’s strong defensive lineup. Others, meanwhile, cautioned it was premature to make any firm judgments about Manning’s future.
After the game, Manning reflected on his performance, admitting, “I need to play better.”
Former New York Jets scout Daniel Kelly expressed a more optimistic view, saying he was encouraged by what he saw. “He showed improvement in several crucial aspects,” Kelly noted. “He’s getting better at reading the field and delivering accurate passes on second and third looks. I noticed some plays where he avoided pressure effectively and made yards with his legs.”
Next up, Texas will face San Jose State on September 6th.
