The Missouri conservative said his committee is already working on how to craft the next big tax bill, which Smith said would be more than $4.3 trillion, because many provisions of the Trump Tax Cuts and Jobs Act are set to expire next year.
“We’re establishing 12 different tax teams on the Ways and Means Committee to help our members be better equipped and better prepared, because if Congress doesn’t do anything, over $4.3 trillion in taxes are going to expire by the end of 2025. That’s why this election is so important,” Smith said.
Asked about implementing Trump’s plan to repeal the tip tax, Smith said, “We are a working-class party, and we want to make sure that the policies that are passed, whether it’s taxes, whether it’s trade, whether it’s health care, reflect our views.”
Smith said he comes from a rural Ozark town in the Mid-South of the United States, adding, “That’s why I was so pleased to see J.D. Vance chosen as vice president. He comes from a working-class background.”

Smith noted that many Americans are struggling with historic inflation and that Americans have more than $1 trillion in combined credit card debt, and said Trump’s policies would help “get the economy back on track.”
“Many of the people who would benefit from a tax exemption on tips are working-class, blue-collar Americans who are just trying to put food on the table and gas in their car,” Smith said.
