Can Money Buy NFL Fandom?
This week, Vinod and Neeru Khosla were officially recognized as the new majority owners of the Seahawks, but Vinod’s remarks during an introductory press conference on Wednesday included an unexpected twist.
“I actually came to this country in ’76, right when the Steelers were winning the Super Bowl, so I was a big Steelers fan back then and I still am,” he admitted. “To add a little-known fact, I still catch every Steelers game too.”
The Steelers were quite the powerhouse in the 1970s, clinching four Super Bowl titles (1974, ’75, ’78, and ’79) and featuring legends like Franco Harris, “Mean” Joe Greene, Lynn Swann, and Terry Bradshaw.
It’s easy to see why Khosla, who immigrated to the U.S. from India to pursue an MBA at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon, would have been captivated by such a successful team.
“He has always been passionate about sports, especially football, and he’s longed to get involved in the strategic side,” Neeru explained. “He was really the driving force behind this decision. I’m incredibly proud of all the effort he’s put into it.”
At 71, Khosla has an impressive track record. He co-founded Sun Microsystems and is now known as a venture capitalist, with a wealth reportedly around $13.3 billion.
With a stint as a limited partner with the 49ers starting in May 2025, Khosla seems to be hoping to replicate that Steelers success on the West Coast, aiming to transform the current Super Bowl champion Seahawks into his own dynasty.
“The mission is pretty straightforward: maintain the winning streak and secure another Super Bowl,” he stated. “Honestly, it’s that simple. Our strategy will focus on the long term. So, we want to keep winning while also learning along the way. We’re still figuring things out.”
“The other owners have been really welcoming and eager to share their knowledge, so we have a lot to absorb. We’ll be in learning mode for quite a while.”
Khosla’s journey begins with a Super Bowl 2026 rematch against the Patriots on September 9 at Seattle’s Lumen Field. There won’t be any doubt about which team he’ll be supporting in that matchup.
