Seahawks' Sam Darnold prepared for Super Bowl 60 against the Patriots

The morning in San Clemente is calm, with a hint of ocean spray in the air and the familiar scent of salt and sunscreen. For Sam Darnold, a local who’s navigated his share of challenges, it’s all part of his journey as he steps into the role of starting quarterback for the Seahawks in Super Bowl 60.

Many think they know Darnold’s story, but few understand it from his perspective.

Once labeled as a promising yet troubled talent, he’s made his way from being the third overall draft pick in 2018 to overcoming a series of setbacks with five teams in eight seasons.

Darnold’s roots trace back to a family shaped by a spirit of competition and perseverance in Dana Point and San Clemente.

His mother, Chris, taught physical education at a nearby middle school and had a volleyball background. His father, Mike, played offensive line in college and now works as a plumber. And then there’s his older sister, Franchi, who set high standards in her own right as a collegiate athlete. Plus, there’s his grandfather, Dick Hammer, with a notable history as a USC athlete and even a Hollywood actor.

“My parents came from humble beginnings,” Darnold told NBC earlier this season. “My sister showed me the value of hard work, and my grandpa is a legend.”

In his family, athletics weren’t just pastimes—they were a language. Darnold dabbled in football, basketball, and baseball, often playing beach volleyball in his free time, which taught him to compete for the joy of it rather than the score.

His parents instilled the idea that failure doesn’t define someone; it’s all about how you respond.

But really, basketball reigned supreme for him, especially in the era of Kobe Bryant.

“Watching Kobe play and trying to emulate him was a huge inspiration,” he reflected.

Coming of Age

When Darnold started at San Clemente High School, a starting quarterback was already in place. Adapting was essential, and he stepped up in various roles—receiver, linebacker, whatever the team needed.

“Sam was a fierce competitor in any sport,” remarked Jaime Ortiz, his high school football coach. Despite facing injuries early on, Darnold’s senior year was remarkable.

“He was named league MVP in football and basketball, plus received CIF Offensive Player of the Year. Everyone saw him as one of the best athletes in Orange County,” said Ortiz.

Even now, Ortiz keeps in touch with Darnold, who still comes back to share his experiences with current players. The relationship remains strong, even as Darnold’s stage has grown.

“San Clemente has a good number of Seahawks fans now, thanks to Sam,” Ortiz added with a laugh.

Despite his accolades, Darnold wasn’t highly recruited—except by one key figure.

Steve Sarkisian offered him a scholarship to USC after being impressed by his skills.

At USC, Darnold forged relationships that would stick with him. Notably, he and Uchenna Nwosu, whom he met at 17, share a close friendship.

“He’s overcome a lot of doubt,” Nwosu noted, proud of his friend.

Nwosu also shared a fun quirk about Darnold, revealing his unexpected love for birds and his knack for identifying them with a special app.

His former mentors, Matt Barkley and Matt Leinart, are also proud of Darnold’s journey.

“He exemplifies the Trojan family,” Barkley stated, while Leinart added more bluntly, “Sam truly embodies ‘fight on’.”

After being drafted by the Jets, Darnold faced challenges that tested his resolve. Carolina was turbulent, but he made solid friends there, including Baker Mayfield.

“Sam and I became close. It’s great to see him flourish now,” Mayfield expressed.

Josh Allen, a fellow quarterback from the 2018 draft class, appreciates Darnold’s talent and their mutual love for movie quotes.

In San Francisco, Darnold revitalized his career under new coaching, leading the Vikings to notable success.

His teammate J.J. McCarthy also shared a fun fact about Darnold, highlighting his quirky fandom of *NSYNC and Justin Timberlake.

In Seattle, Darnold built bonds with teammates and became known for his competitive spirit across various activities.

Now, all eyes are on him as he heads into one of the biggest games of his life.

This isn’t a redemption story; rather, it’s one of resilience and defiance against expectation.

When Sunday arrives, the world will see him throw passes and form opinions based on the results. But those closest to him already know who he is.

He remains the same energetic person—still that kid in flip-flops and board shorts, balancing sports, the beach, and good-natured backyard competitions. And that’s more than enough.
