Jim Carrey recently shared some intriguing details about his time filming *How the Grinch Stole Christmas*. In a candid interview, he mentioned that he almost walked away from the role due to severe panic attacks triggered by the makeup process. To help him cope, six members of a SEAL team came to his aid, teaching him techniques for managing the stress. Carrey recalled specific advice from Richard Marcinko, a former Navy SEAL, which included odd but practical tips like punching himself in the leg and changing his environment to interrupt anxious thoughts.
During filming, Carrey struggled notably with the extensive makeup, revealing that it initially took up to eight hours before it was refined to three hours with the help of the Bee Gees’ music, which he found energizing. He humorously expressed gratitude towards Barry Gibb, saying he’d love to meet him for his role in keeping spirits high during such a grueling process.
Director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer noted that Carrey’s challenges with the costume made him consider quitting and even returning his hefty $20 million paycheck. Howard shared that he’d often find Carrey lying on the floor, trying to manage his anxiety with a paper bag—an image of genuine struggle.
Grazer recounted how he encouraged Carrey to meet Marcinko before making any drastic decisions about quitting the film. It turned out that Marcinko was also the founder of SEAL Team 6, and Carrey appreciated the unexpected connection. The makeup process, while taxing, did eventually become more manageable for him after their interventions.
Howard explained that the makeup was not just a physical burden but also took a toll on Carrey’s mental well-being, prompting adjustments to the shooting schedule. Carrey’s resilience in the face of such challenges adds a deeper layer to the merriment of his iconic role as the Grinch.
