Sean Combs Facing Lawsuits Amid Criminal Sentencing

Sean “Diddy” Combs may be looking at a prison sentence of around four years stemming from a recent criminal case, but he’s also grappling with a staggering number of lawsuits that accuse him of sexual violence and other troubling actions.

He is currently contending with about 70 civil lawsuits, which have been described as a “headache” for Combs. Legal experts estimate that his legal fees related to federal sex crime cases could surpass $15 million.

Combs, founder of Bad Boy Records, has a fortune estimated at $400 million. Some suggest he may either choose to “fight like hell” or quickly pay off his accusers. The opinions among lawyers seem to vary widely.

One attorney, Nicole Brenecki, indicated it wouldn’t surprise her if Combs opted to settle many of these claims, suggesting that the financial toll might be manageable and could help alleviate his ongoing troubles.

On the other hand, Bradford Cohen, a lawyer specializing in hip-hop and celebrity cases, believes that many of the lawsuits appear weak, and thinks it’s more advantageous for Combs to push back. He mentioned, “It doesn’t make sense in the long run because others will want to pursue you even more vigorously now that you’ve settled one case.”

Former Miami prosecutor David Settlezer pointed out that Combs was convicted of two counts of prostitution in a federal trial but was acquitted of a more serious charge related to sex trafficking. He remarked that Combs’ legal challenges boil down to a question of how much he’s willing to spend on defense, especially considering lawyers can be quite costly.

The legal troubles for Combs began in late 2023 when his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, filed a lawsuit alleging rape and abuse. That case was settled within a day for $20 million and was later discussed during Combs’ criminal trial.

Some attorneys believe this rapid settlement might have opened the floodgates for further lawsuits. One lawyer commented that it creates an impression of vulnerability, prompting more claims to emerge.

Cohen, who has represented various celebrities, suggested that Combs might find success by taking a hint from Cardi B’s approach, as she has had her own legal battles that she confronted head-on.

Despite some claims being dismissed, there are still serious allegations on the table. Jones, a Chicago record producer, claims Diddy instructed him to supply drugs and prostitutes for his own entertainment, although many of Jones’ other allegations were dismissed earlier this year.

As the lawsuits continue to stack up, some have already been completely thrown out, particularly when judges ruled against anonymity. One particularly alarming claim alleging that Combs and Jay-Z raped a 13-year-old girl was also voluntarily dropped by the accuser’s attorney in February.

The accuser’s lawyer, Tony Buzbee, who has represented several individuals taking action against Combs, has been barred from practicing in Manhattan’s federal court and did not respond when asked for comments.
