Durge and Pettersson: New Beginnings at the Rangers

Earlier this month, Alan Walsh, the agent for Sean Durge, ran into Marcus Pettersson at Filip Hronek’s wedding near Prague. It was a surprising coincidence considering that Durge and Pettersson had just become teammates with the Rangers ten days prior. Walsh had planned to call Durge to catch up and share a word with Pettersson before they all hit the ice together as the 2026-27 season looms closer.

Despite coming from different backgrounds, both players reached New York at the same time. The Rangers completely overhauled their defensive lineup when trades were finalized on July 1st.

As they prepare for their roles, Durge and Pettersson are expected to form a formidable second defensive pairing. They’re seen as a pair that could effectively combine mobility, offensive capability, and solid defensive skills, which is pretty exciting for fans.

During their first Zoom call last Thursday, the mutual respect between Durge and Pettersson was clear. Durge exclaimed, “I know Marcus has a great game. The D-corps is solid and exciting. Whatever the plans are for me, I’m on board. If I’m lucky enough to play with Marcus, I think it could be an exciting pairing.”

Pettersson reciprocated, saying, “I know Sean’s game. He skates well and drives the puck. He’s offensively skilled and has a lot of potential. I played with John Marino before, and he was always a positive force. I think we could be a great pairing, but given the talent in our group, there’s healthy competition. It’ll be interesting to see how the chemistry develops.”

For Durge, the trade to New York was somewhat unexpected. The 27-year-old had previously assisted the Arizona Coyotes in shaping a young roster, ultimately reaching the playoffs last season.

Durge mentioned he’s dealing with the transition well, noting this isn’t his first trade experience. He was previously moved from the Kings to the Coyotes in June 2023. “Initially, you’re shocked, but then you get motivated,” he reflected. “I’m eager to prove the Rangers coaching staff that they made the right choice. It’s a boost for me, especially during a long summer, and I can’t wait to get started.”

On the other hand, Pettersson had to waive his no-move clause to approve his trade to the Rangers. When asked about this decision, the Swedish defenseman highlighted the allure of joining an Original Six team and his existing rapport with head coach Mike Sullivan.

Pettersson played under Sullivan for parts of seven seasons in Pittsburgh, where he had a peak season with 30 points last year. “I always felt we had a good relationship,” he stated about Sullivan. “He has clear communication and knows how to direct us. That aligns well with my style as I want to play at a fast pace and pressure the puck.”

Beyond Sullivan, Pettersson has connections within the Rangers. He also played alongside Mika Zibanejad on the Swedish national team at the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship in Stockholm. Describing Zibanejad, he noted, “Having him nearby was beneficial; we had great conversations during our time together.”

Furthermore, Rangers captain JT Miller has also reached out to Pettersson, reassuring him of a warm welcome. After spending a significant amount of time in Vancouver before returning to New York, Pettersson has received supportive calls from former Canucks teammates who’ve expressed enthusiasm about his return to the Rangers.
