Sean Duffy shares details of his disagreement with Elon Musk about reducing air traffic controllers: 'The Senate approved my appointment'

Transport Secretary Discusses Elon Musk’s Influence on Staffing Decisions

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy shared insights during a recent episode of “Pod Force One” regarding the ongoing debate over staffing reductions pushed by Elon Musk.

On the show, Duffy mentioned that Miranda Devine, the host, had drawn a firm line against the idea of eliminating what she referred to as “safety critical positions,” specifically highlighting air traffic controllers.

Duffy expressed a level of comfort with Musk, acknowledging, “I’ll get along well with Elon enough. He has a lot of stocks going through DOT,” referencing Musk’s companies, SpaceX and Tesla. However, he was quick to assert, “Elon – or no one else is a secretary. I am me. The Senate confirmed me.”

He clarified his stance further: “I think it might not have been intentional, it might have been ham-handed, like some of the requests made by the Department of Government Efficiency. But my position was that I had no intention of firing an air traffic controller.”

“A critical position in safety will not be fired within the Department of Transportation,” he continued. “We can do things more efficiently…but we are not going to fire an air traffic controller. I think the paper made it a bigger deal than necessary.”

Duffy recounted a disagreement with Musk that occurred before a significant air collision incident on January 29, which involved a Black Hawk helicopter and a regional jet near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

He acknowledged Musk’s innovative qualities, saying, “Eron is a great innovator. He is creative. And again, there’s a lot to learn from him, but I run this department. If I did fire the controller, oh, think about what the liberal media would do. I’d be slaughtered. Thank God that didn’t happen, but that’s why it’s crucial to ensure your secretary is someone who drives policy.”

Until the end of May, Musk was largely seen as the force behind Government Efficiency (DOGE), a cost-cutting initiative aimed at federal operations. However, during this time, he had conflicts with various cabinet officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent. Former Trump White House strategist Steve Bannon even remarked that Musk had been confronted about his approach, comparing it to a rugby tackle.

In early June, Musk expressed frustration over a major funding bill, warning that it could greatly increase the national deficit. He stated, “It will undermine the work the DOGE team is doing.” He also raised concerns regarding potential tariffs on critical minerals from China, which could impact his electric vehicle operations.

Duffy concluded by reflecting on the complexities of the current situation: “I don’t know what happened inside, but I can confidently say that the president wouldn’t have been any more generous, and it wouldn’t have been better for him.”
