Sean Duffy Starts Review That May Reveal Illegal Immigrants in Trucking Industry

National Audit on Trucking Licenses Initiated

The U.S. Department of Transportation, under Secretary Sean Duffy, has kicked off a nationwide audit aimed at addressing concerns related to illegal immigrants potentially infiltrating the trucking sector. The audit will focus on states that issue non-dominant commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) and will assess how well these states are managing their licensing processes to ensure unqualified individuals are not obtaining licenses.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of foreign-born truck drivers, but there’s a lack of definitive data explaining the extent to which this is due to legal versus illegal immigration, as noted in analyses of census data by various sources.

In a statement, Duffy pointed out the implications of previous open border policies, suggesting they have allowed, perhaps unintentionally, a surge in unqualified applicants getting behind the wheel of trucks. He emphasized the importance of this audit in maintaining safety for families on the road and ensuring that only qualified drivers hold CDLs.

The audit aims to make sure all states adhere to federal rules by ensuring that all truck drivers on the roads are properly documented and qualified. Duffy has also issued orders targeting the trucking industry to address English proficiency among commercial vehicle drivers, stating that those who fail to meet the standards could be deemed out of service.

This follows a trend initiated by past administrations focusing on ensuring truck drivers can effectively communicate in English, which the government argues is crucial for road safety, particularly when interacting with law enforcement and at various checkpoints.

Concerns have been raised by advocacy groups such as American Truck Driver United, highlighting incidents where foreign drivers, including those possibly undocumented, were involved in fatal accidents. These advocates argue that the presence of foreign truckers is impacting American drivers’ income and, in some cases, threatening businesses.

In light of these issues, the audit represents a step towards ensuring a safer and more regulated trucking industry, but its implications and outcomes are yet to be fully understood.
