Sean Manaea Reflects on Challenging Season

DETROIT – Sean Manaea spoke with a hint of regret when reflecting on his season late Monday afternoon.

“I set high standards for myself and for this team,” Manaea noted after the Mets edged the Tigers 10-8 at Comerica Park. “Everyone seems to be contributing, but I’m not. It’s really frustrating. I wish I had a solution, but honestly, I don’t. I get that.”

In the game, the left-handed pitcher lasted only 3²/₃ innings, giving up five runs off eight hits while striking out six. This made him the latest Mets starter to struggle, finishing the outing without a walk.

Earlier, Kodai Senga also had a rough outing against the Marlins, which didn’t help the bullpen.

For Manaea, sporting a 5.60 ERA, this marks his third consecutive start without reaching five innings, putting extra pressure on the relief pitchers.

Jahai Jones hit a deep shot for the Tigers.

Manaea allowed a two-run homer to Wenselperez during the third inning.

“The main issue for Sean right now is he hasn’t improved his fastball,” coach Carlos Mendoza said. “He struggles with that, which limits his ability to effectively use his changeups and sweepers. It all starts with him needing to elevate that fastball.”

Mendoza indicated that the team is committed to helping Manaea improve, adopting a similar strategy that was used with Senga.

“They’re both part of the rotation,” Mendoza explained. “Our responsibility is to find a way to assist them, and that’s what we’ll do.”

Manaea’s challenging day continued as he allowed an RBI triple to Zach McKinstry, followed by a single that brought in another run for Jones.

It required Gregory Soto to get the last out of the inning.

Manaea will need to boost his fastball if he hopes to find success in the near future.

“It’s crucial to my game,” he admitted. “I generate a lot of swings and misses out there, but if it’s just a few inches off, it can really affect everything else.”

“I feel like I’m following all the right protocols, but things aren’t turning up for me right now,” he added.
