Sean McDermott criticizes officials for disputed interception

Buffalo Bills’ Heartbreaking Playoff Loss

The Buffalo Bills faced yet another disappointing end to their season, mainly due to some controversial calls during overtime.

The Denver Broncos had a moment where they might have avoided a defensive pass interference in the end zone late in the fourth quarter, but the Bills still managed to push the game into overtime.

However, everything changed when Josh Allen threw an interception while aiming for Brandin Cooks downfield.

Initially, it seemed like both players had simultaneous possession, which would have given the Bills the ball. But as Cooks fell to the ground clutching the ball, it slipped away, allowing Broncos defensive back Jaquan McMillian to grab it and secure the interception.

A replay review indicated that Cooks had maintained possession as he hit the ground, which typically would have concluded the play in favor of the Bills. But enough of the ball was already in McMillian’s control by the time Cooks landed, leading the officials to stick with their decision.

Bills coach Sean McDermott sought a closer examination of the play and called a timeout—though teams aren’t permitted to challenge plays in overtime.

“It’s logical to me… that the head official would want to check on such a significant play. It could have slowed the game, but it was important,” McDermott explained to reporters.

He was clearly frustrated, further expressing confusion over the ruling. “If that’s how it’s ruled, why not take a moment to ensure the call was correct? We were likely in a position for a game-winning field goal,” he added.

However, McDermott continued his critique after the game, stating his thoughts to Buffalo News. “That play didn’t meet the standard. It was a clear catch. I’ve reviewed it over and over, and I can’t be convinced otherwise.”

In addition to the confusion with the interception, the officials chose not to pursue a pass interference call against the Broncos, which could have benefited the Bills.

This interception marked the fourth for Allen during the game, and while there’s always accountability, it’s hard not to feel for Bills fans who likely had a restless night.

Now, the first-seeded Broncos await the outcome of the upcoming game between the New England Patriots and Houston Texans.
