Buffalo Bills Part Ways with Coach Sean McDermott
Following a rough loss in the AFC Divisional Round, reports indicate that Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott’s evaluation of the team’s 2025 season was not well-received. He was dismissed from his position on Monday, just two days after an overtime defeat against the Denver Broncos.
According to WGRZ, Bills general manager Brandon Beane and team owner Terry Pegula expressed dissatisfaction with McDermott’s assessment, particularly after he highlighted gaps in the roster that needed addressing for a Super Bowl win. This conversation reportedly took place a few weeks before the team’s game in Denver.
It was noted by the NFL Network that McDermott himself seemed uncertain about the team’s talent. They mentioned that there was ambiguity about how well his thoughts would fit within the organization.
Star Power but Missing Pieces
The Bills had notable players, including the 2024 NFL MVP Josh Allen and leading rusher James Cook. However, a lack of strong receivers has been concerning, especially since the departure of Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs. Beane had expected Keon Coleman, picked 33rd overall in 2024, to evolve into a key target for Allen. Unfortunately, Coleman has spent significant time on the sidelines this season, recording only 38 receptions for 404 yards over 13 games.
No immediate comment has been made by the Bills regarding McDermott’s firing, though Beane’s promotion to president of football operations raised eyebrows alongside the decision to let go of McDermott.
Despite the setbacks, McDermott led the Bills to the playoffs in eight of the last nine seasons, which, I suppose, is impressive, even if they didn’t reach the Super Bowl as some had hoped. They did secure two appearances in the AFC Championship—both times losing to the Kansas City Chiefs, who managed to eliminate them from the playoffs on four occasions in the last five years.
Looking Ahead
With other teams already in the midst of their own coaching searches, Buffalo is entering the race a bit late. They’ll need to act swiftly to attract top candidates for the next season. As for McDermott, he is likely to be highly sought after by teams looking for a new head coach, including contenders like the Baltimore Ravens, Las Vegas Raiders, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Sean McDermott’s comments about the roster apparently did not please the team’s leadership.
