Bills Face Challenges After Recent Losses
In just over a week, the Bills shifted from an undefeated record to a situation where they urgently need to regroup. Their promising start to the season took a turn after consecutive defeats against the Patriots and the Falcons.
“Consider your offense, your defense, your special teams,” Bills coach Sean McDermott remarked to reporters following a 24-14 loss to the Falcons, marking the team’s record at 4-2. “We need to reset, start fresh, and put in the effort to sort this out.”
The Bills truly struggled during this prime-time match-up. Atlanta outgained Buffalo, racking up 443 yards compared to the Bills’ 291.
The Falcons capitalized on several big plays, including an impressive 81-yard touchdown run by Bijan Robinson. Meanwhile, Drake London shined for Atlanta, making 10 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown. He nearly skewed the game further away from the Bills, but in a close moment before halftime, he went out of bounds while trying to dive for the end zone, leaving the Falcons ahead at 21-7.
Buffalo managed to score on their first possession of the second half, narrowing the gap to 21-14, but their offense fizzled out for the remainder of the game.
Quarterback Josh Allen faced relentless pressure throughout the game, being sacked four times and throwing two interceptions. “We had an opportunity to take advantage of it, but we missed our chance,” Allen expressed. “It’s frustrating when parts of the team are functioning well, and you feel like you’re not pulling your weight.”
There seems to be a growing concern that the Bills’ strong start was perhaps boosted by a favorable schedule, as reflected by their victories over teams like the Ravens, Dolphins, Jets, and Saints—all of which have combined for just three wins so far this season.
As the Bills head into their bye week, they are set to face off against the Panthers on October 26 in Charlotte. “This is going to stick with me for the next two weeks,” Allen said. “There’s definitely a lot of work to do.”
