Sean McVay reacts strongly to reporter's question about Matthew Stafford

Rams Stung After Championship Loss

The Rams were understandably crushed, and any talk about their future felt off-limits for the moment.

Following their narrow 31-27 defeat to the Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game, coach Sean McVay faced questions about whether Matthew Stafford would remain the starting quarterback next season. He, however, sidestepped direct engagement with the topic.

“Yeah, well, if he still wants to play,” McVay said to the media. “What’s that question even about?”

He continued, “You’d have to ask him. We were right there. I’m confident he could keep playing at a high level if he chooses to. I mean, he’s the league MVP… I acknowledge others, but he’s been on a whole different wavelength.”

Stafford, nearing 38 and wrapping up his 17th NFL season, had flirted with leaving the Rams last offseason, even considering a move to the Giants. But ultimately, he decided to stay in Los Angeles. This year was, from what I gather, a complete ride.

He put up impressive stats—throwing for 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns—making him a strong candidate for the MVP award, with Drake Maye from the Patriots likely positioned as the runner-up.

Although McVay may not have been eager to discuss Stafford’s future, the quarterback himself did take a moment to respond after the game.

“You can’t really sum up half a year of life just ten minutes after a loss,” Stafford remarked to reporters.

He did put in a solid performance, yet the Rams fell short against the Seahawks, with the final quarter being a scoreless stalemate for both teams.

The turning point of the game came when Stafford and the Rams executed a precise drive. They diligently advanced the ball for over seven minutes in the fourth, only to get halted at the Seahawks’ 6-yard line.

This drive was essentially their last chance to find the end zone and reclaim the lead.

Stafford finished the game going 22-of-35 for 374 yards and three touchdowns. However, he had a couple of missteps, including a notable punt by Xavier Smith that didn’t help their cause.
