Rams Coach Sean McVay Shares Hopes for Puka Nacua
In Phoenix, Rams coach Sean McVay is optimistic about star wide receiver Puka Nacua, despite recent challenges regarding his off-field choices.
One notable incident occurred on New Year’s Eve, where Nacua allegedly bit a woman and made anti-Semitic comments, leading her to file a civil lawsuit against him.
McVay noted that the team has been aware of the situation for some time and acknowledged he is still working to gather all the facts before making further statements.
Nonetheless, he emphasized his support for Nacua, saying, “I’ve known this player for three years, and I trust his heart. I trust people.” At the NFL’s annual meeting, he highlighted the importance of building relationships and helping players develop, insisting there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.
While he backs Nacua, McVay pointed out that the wide receiver must also understand the responsibilities that come with playing in the NFL, particularly on a high-profile team.
McVay shared a serious conversation with Nacua, informing him to “Understand what is expected of you, who you can be, and who you want to be.” He feels they’re on the same page moving forward.
For Nacua, there’s a lot at stake. As one of the NFL’s top young receivers, he plays a pivotal role in the Rams’ passing game. Additionally, he is seeking a new contract extension that could make him the highest-paid receiver in the league. The depth of the team’s negotiations with him must align with his identity as a player and a person.
McVay’s relationship with Nacua allows for straightforward discussions. He stated, “We will communicate clearly, openly and honestly.” He added, “The play on the field is great, but there’s responsibility in terms of decisions and representing everything.” Nacua is aware of these expectations, and McVay hopes for a long future with him on the team, emphasizing the growth and learning opportunities ahead.
