Rams Reflect on NFC Championship Loss and Future with Adams

PHOENIX — After a tough defeat against the Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game, the Rams faced the difficult reality of a season that didn’t meet their expectations.

There’s something especially hard about losing a shot at the Super Bowl to a rival and having to confront the errors that led to that loss. It’s frustrating, but amidst all that, there was an unexpected glimmer of positivity.

Reviewing game footage, particularly plays involving veteran wide receiver Davante Adams, revealed two important insights. First, it became evident that the Rams hadn’t maximized Adams’ potential, despite his respectable stats of 60 receptions, 789 yards, and 14 touchdowns. There was a sense that it could have been so much more.

That realization left a bitter taste, yet it was clear that Adams, now 33, was still at the top of his game.

This revelation fueled a desire for the Rams to inch closer to competing with Super Bowl champions like the Seahawks.

Ultimately, the Rams concluded it would be wise to keep Adams, despite earlier considerations of trading him. “If I thought it was best for the team, I would have done it,” McVay stated, reflecting on the trade talks.

However, the Rams’ reputation for openness about roster changes became a double-edged sword when news of trade discussions concerning Adams leaked out.

This created complications for McVay, who’s still relatively young at 40 but has been coaching for nearly a decade. As he navigates this transition, clear communication with players—especially veterans like Adams—has become critical.

In the past, McVay might have avoided discussing trade rumors to sidestep uncomfortable situations, but he’s coming to understand the importance of honesty. “There have been instances where I didn’t handle things well in the past; I want to avoid those mistakes,” he said.

Therefore, he reached out to Adams, emphasizing the Rams’ commitment to assembling the best team possible, which included being open to trade discussions.

McVay candidly informed Adams about the trade conversations that had taken place. “I wanted to convey the truth about the context,” he explained. “I want to be transparent even if the talks didn’t progress very far.”

Ultimately, McVay assured Adams of his commitment to the player, while also asserting that business decisions would prioritize the team’s interest above personal feelings.

There’s a silver lining to their transparency: the review of game footage demonstrated Adams was indeed a key asset moving forward. “I didn’t believe it was best for the team to trade him,” McVay said, indicating Adams’ potential for a stronger season in his second year.

This communication marks a growing maturity for McVay, who recognizes the importance of clearing the air. “There’s a lot of misinformation out there,” he noted, stressing the need for a balanced approach to honesty.
