Assistant Coach Gets a Bit Too Enthusiastic During Game
Things got a little heated after Texas coach Sean Miller reprimanded his assistant, Ryan Anderson, on Tuesday. This happened right after Tramon Mark made a nail-biting game-winning shot with just one second remaining, bringing Texas a 68-66 victory over North Carolina State during the First Four.
Anderson seemed to lose track of where he was, running far down the court as Mark took the winning jumper. He nearly got into the paint, then dashed back to the sideline—risking a technical foul that could have wiped out their two-point lead.
Miller’s evident frustration suggested Anderson’s antics might have crossed a line. At one point, he was on the court enough that he could’ve been mistaken for the sixth defender.
In a video from courtside, you could even see one of the North Carolina State players signaling to the referee about Anderson’s running around as another coach mimicked a third base coach trying to direct a runner.
Upon returning to the sideline, Anderson was met with Miller’s yelling, a clear indication of the coach’s anger. Miller turned away but quickly spun around to try and confront Anderson again, though another staff member intervened.
Meanwhile, a fan shouted out for a technical foul, which really added to the tension in the atmosphere.
After making that basket, North Carolina State (20-14) called a timeout, forcing Miller to refocus his team for a frustrated defensive stand against a last-ditch three-point attempt. Ultimately, NC State couldn’t convert, allowing Texas (19-14) to advance and face No. 6 BYU on Friday.
Miller and Anderson have quite a bit of history together. Anderson has been part of Miller’s coaching staff for years, having initially joined him at the University of Arizona before moving to Texas after a stint at Xavier.
The Longhorns are currently the underdogs by 1.5 points in their upcoming game. The winner will go on to face the victor of the match between No. 3 Gonzaga and No. 14 Kennesaw State.
