Broncos Restructure Coaching for 2026 Season
The Broncos are gearing up for some significant changes as they head into the 2026 season.
Sean Payton revealed on Tuesday that he will be stepping back from play-calling responsibilities, handing the reins to new offensive coordinator Davis Webb starting next season. This will be Payton’s fourth year in Denver, and notably, it’s the first time he won’t be calling the plays.
Last season, the top-seeded Broncos faced a tough loss, falling 10-7 to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game—leaving them just shy of a Super Bowl appearance. Following that disappointment, the Broncos decided to part ways with their previous offensive coordinator, Joe Lombardi.
“I think this is going to be beneficial for the team, and I’ll support him in any way I can,” Payton commented during the NFL Scouting Combine regarding the shift in play-calling. “I wouldn’t make this change if I didn’t believe it would positively impact the team.”
Payton was the primary play-caller during his time with the Saints from 2006 to 2021, including their Super Bowl victory against the Colts in 2010.
Davis Webb, who is 31, was promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator on February 2nd.
“This shift isn’t exactly new for us; we’ve been discussing it for a while,” Payton shared. “I really believe he has what it takes for play-calling. It’s about doing what’s best for the team.” He added that he plans to remain engaged in both offensive and defensive strategies.
Before taking on the OC role, Webb had been in the spotlight for a while. He previously interviewed for head coaching roles with teams like the Raiders and Bills and was even considered for the OC position with the Giants before making the move to Denver.
Webb had some experience calling plays during a preseason game in 2025, where he reportedly received positive feedback from the players. “He was quick, efficient, and really brought an infectious energy. The team’s response was encouraging,” Payton noted at the time.
As Webb steps into this pivotal role, he will be tasked with seeking improvements for the Broncos’ offense, which finished the previous season ranked 14th in both points and total yards per game.
It’s worth mentioning that Webb joined the Broncos coaching staff in 2023, a year after wrapping up his playing career.
