A search is underway for a plane carrying 10 people who went missing while traveling through Norton Sound, Alaska, south of the Arctic Circle. This is the third major US Airlines incident over the past eight days.
AP Report According to the Alaska Public Safety Agency, the Bering Air Caravan was heading from the Arlanklate to the Gnome, along with nine passengers and pilots.
Authorities and rescuers were working to determine the last known coordinates of the Cessna.
The Norm Volunteer Fire Department said the pilot told the air traffic controller that he was “intent on entering the holding pattern while waiting for the runway to be cleared.” Report.
Unalakleet is a community of approximately 690 people in western Alaska, about 150 miles southeast of Gnome and 395 miles northwest of Anchorage.
The names of the people on board have not been released yet.
A gold rush town, Gnome is located just south of the Arctic Circle and is known as the ending point for the 1,000-mile Iditarod Trail Thread Dog Race.
The plane search comes as US aviation safety investigators continue to investigate two fatal incidents in recent weeks.
These tragedies included an air collision between a Black Hawk helicopter and a passenger jet near Washington, DC, killing 67 people and crashing on the Philadelphia Medeback Jet killed seven people. .
