Search Continues for Missing Wisconsin Graduate Student
Authorities in Wisconsin are intensifying their search for a graduate student who went missing after leaving a friend’s gathering over the weekend. As they approach the fourth day of the investigation, they are appealing for public assistance.
The La Crosse Police Department reported that 22-year-old Elliot Heinz was last observed walking home from a bar by the Mississippi River around 3:30 AM on Sunday. Earlier in the evening, she had been at Broncos bar with friends until around 2:30 AM. Surveillance footage shows her heading toward her apartment, which is located about a half-mile away—a roughly 30-minute walk.
Heinz’s mother, Amber, has expressed her concern, mentioning, “I’m trying to stay positive.” She noted that the community’s support has been encouraging, with many coming out to assist in the search.
The situation became alarming for her family when they were unable to reach her on Sunday morning. Local police, along with family and friends, have made numerous attempts to locate her without success. Notably, Amber mentioned that a friend had moved Heinz’s cell phone during the ongoing search.
Heinz is described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, with blonde hair and blue eyes. The last known outfit she was wearing included a white T-shirt and jean shorts. Viterbo University, where she is studying, has circulated a statement from her family, urging for her safe return.
Amber shared her feelings about Elliot’s absence, stating, “She’s our oldest. I want her brother and sister, her dad, and me to have her back home.”
The family is requesting that residents in the vicinity check their home security footage from the early hours of Sunday, particularly between 2 AM and 6 AM.
Authorities are deploying considerable resources in response to the case. Retired FBI agent Jason Pack highlighted the importance of reconstructing the timeline of events, mentioning that investigators are reviewing surveillance, gathering witness accounts, and looking into phone, social media, and financial records to piece together Heinz’s movements and interactions.
If there is evidence suggesting that Heinz was taken across state lines, it could involve federal agencies more decisively. Pack noted, “If investigators believe there is an abduction, federal involvement is likely.”
As the search continues, Heinz’s family is remaining hopeful for her safe return. Amber emphasized their commitment to finding Elliott, stating, “We’re just trying to get her back, focusing on the here and now.”
If you have any information regarding Heinz’s whereabouts, you’re encouraged to contact the police non-emergency number at 608-782-7575 or reach out to crime stoppers in the area at 608-784-TIPS or online.
