Tragic Shooting in Rural Australia
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A tragic shooting incident occurred on a rural property in Australia on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of two police officers and a serious injury to another. The suspect remains at large, complicating the police’s extensive search efforts in the vast remote area.
The incident unfolded when 10 armed officers were executing a search warrant at the property located in Polepanca, a small town in Victoria, approximately 320 kilometers (200 miles) northeast of Melbourne.
According to Victoria Police Chief Mike Bush, the gunman shot and killed a 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable. “These officers encountered a criminal, but they were murdered in cold blood,” he stated during a press briefing in the nearby city of Wangaratta.
The suspect fled on foot into the surrounding woods, where hundreds of officers continued their search. Bush did not disclose details about the warrant, nor did he confirm the suspect’s identity or his potential motives. Authorities were also trying to locate the suspect’s wife and two children, whose whereabouts are unknown.
Another detective was shot and had surgery Tuesday night, though the injury was deemed non-life-threatening.
Residents have been advised to stay indoors, and travel to the area has been discouraged. Local public buildings and nearby airports were closed, and schools with over 100 students were locked down for several hours until it was safe for students to return home.
As night fell, the manhunt intensified, with helicopters and police dogs deployed in search of the suspect.
Poapunka, known for its picturesque vineyards and proximity to Victoria’s alpine tourism spots, is now at the heart of this unfolding situation.
Wayne Gutt, Chief of the Victoria Police Association, expressed a “shocking and eerie sense of fear” among union members. The local police station fell silent upon receiving news of the incident.
The National Police Memorial notes that the last police officer shot on duty in Australia was in South Australia in 2023. Prior to that, in 2022, two officers were killed by extremists in Queensland.
Such violent incidents bring national attention, especially since fatal police shootings are uncommon in Australia. The government implemented stricter gun laws following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, where 35 people lost their lives, significantly curtailing firearm access for the public.
