A shooting at a Chick-fil-A in New Jersey has resulted in one fatality and six injuries. Authorities are treating the incident as targeted, and the suspect is still at large.
Officers responded to the scene on Route 22 in Union around 9 p.m. on Saturday, discovering seven people with gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, one of the victims was pronounced dead on arrival, while the others sustained injuries that are not life-threatening.
The Union County Prosecutor’s Office indicated in a statement that preliminary investigations suggest the shooting was not random, and they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.
As the investigation unfolds, police are still working to find those responsible. There’s dashcam footage circulating that reportedly shows an individual fleeing the scene with a gun.
A man whose girlfriend works at the restaurant mentioned to CBS New York that several men entered, went behind the counter, and opened fire.
While police have not revealed any specifics regarding motives or suspects, they maintain that the attack seems to have been directed rather than indiscriminate. It remains unclear if the victims were purposefully targeted or had connections to the shooter.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has been briefed on the situation, expressing concern for the injured and appreciation for the fast actions of first responders in his statements on social media. He stated that they are in close contact with local law enforcement as the investigation proceeds.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to get in touch with the detective team or submit anonymous tips to aid the investigation. Union County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $10,000 for information leading to an indictment and conviction.
