Search for 5-Year-Old Girl in Laguna Beach Concludes

The Coast Guard announced on Thursday that the search for a 5-year-old girl, who was swept away by a significant wave off Laguna Beach, has been officially called off.

This decision came on Wednesday, following a tragic incident the previous day where the girl, her mother, and another child were all pulled into the ocean by the powerful waves. The mission transitioned from a rescue effort to a recovery operation.

The incident took place around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Treasure Island Beach. Reports indicate that a mother and her two children were caught in perilous waters close to the shore.

Laguna Beach Mayor Mark Orgill explained that the family was simply walking on the beach when a large wave struck, sweeping them into the ocean.

While bystanders heroically managed to save the mother and the other child, the five-year-old girl was tragically lost amidst the turbulent waters. Two individuals who assisted in the rescue of the mother and child sustained injuries and required hospitalization, but officials reported that both were in stable condition.

During the search, rescue teams utilized boats and aerial support, covering over 90 square miles over the course of 30 hours. Teams from the Laguna Beach Marine Safety Division, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol, and the U.S. Coast Guard participated in the search for the missing girl.

“Our hearts go out to the child’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time,” stated Col. Stacey Cressey, commander of the Los Angeles-Long Beach Coast Guard. She noted that calling off the search was a profoundly challenging decision, emphasizing that they responded as promptly as possible, continuing their efforts through the night and into the following evening. They coordinated with Laguna Beach’s first responders for a comprehensive search.

Mayor Orgill described the event as “one of the most heartbreaking incidents I have witnessed in my time serving this community.”

Interestingly, just hours before the tragedy, the city of Laguna Beach had warned the public on Instagram about hazardous beach conditions, stating that “strong rip currents can quickly pull swimmers away from shore, and large waves create dangerous conditions for swimmers, surfers, and anyone near the water’s edge.”
