Tennessee Prison Chief Resigns, Executions Paused Following Christa Pike Incident
The resignation of Tennessee’s prison chief comes in the wake of a problematic execution attempt involving death row inmate Christa Pike, who is now reported to be in critical condition. This troubling event has led Governor Bill Lee to halt all planned executions until 2026 while an independent review takes place. John Yoo, a law professor at UC Berkeley, weighs in on the ensuing legal disputes and discusses significant upcoming Supreme Court cases.
A manhunt is currently ongoing for Jacob Allen Morley, a Tennessee inmate serving a life sentence for murder after he escaped from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville on Sunday. Morley was sentenced for the murder of Cody Birchfield, which occurred back in 2022.
According to the Tennessee Department of Correction, prison staff realized Morley was missing around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday and quickly initiated an emergency search throughout the facility.
Surveillance footage revealed Morley escaping by breaking through a prison fence, still dressed in inmate clothing. Morley stands at 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighs about 240 pounds, has brown hair, and green eyes. Authorities have labeled him “dangerous” and placed him on the state’s most wanted list.
Besides his murder conviction, Morley has also faced charges of burglary, vandalism, tampering with evidence, and evading arrest.
In addition to local law enforcement, federal authorities are now assisting in the search for Morley. Birchfield went missing in early February 2022, last seen in Elizabethton, Tennessee, leading to investigators uncovering signs of a violent crime at his home.
Morley was apprehended on March 2, 2022, following a police chase that reached the North Carolina border. Later, Birchfield’s body was discovered beneath Morley’s residence. Morley’s former girlfriend testified during the trial that he once admitted to having killed Birchfield.
Anyone with information on Morley’s location is urged to call 844-832-3463.
