Seattle Recruiting Non-Citizens, DACA Recipients to Become Police Officers

Seattle officials have opened up police jobs to undocumented immigrants who are part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

The Seattle Police Department (SPD) Lowest City officials are making their first staff cuts in decades and are seeking to take advantage of a recently passed state law that allows jurisdictions to hire foreign nationals as police officers.

The Democratic-controlled state legislature recently passed it Senate Bill 6157 is a law that allows jurisdictions to grant police powers to DACA recipients. One reason this bill was needed is because many liberal cities have decimated their police departments with Black Lives Matter (BLM) policies, defunding police programs, and other policies that generally undermine police, making it difficult to recruit.

Seattle, for example, has lost more than 700 police officers in the past five years and now has just 913 left. stand Police numbers are at their lowest in 30 years.

“The Seattle Police Department continues to lose more officers than we can hire, and 2023 was no exception. 97 officers left the department and of 1,948 applicants, only 61 were hired, or 3 percent,” Seattle Council President Sarah Nelson said.

To solve this self-inflicted crisis, City Hall is considering using SB 6157 to hire DACA recipients, but the proposal has several flaws.

One issue is the fact that illegal immigrants have no right to own or bear firearms in the United States. President Joe Biden’s administration has It became soft It has somewhat enforced that law by stipulating that illegal immigrants employed as police officers can carry guns while on duty, but must return their weapons to the police department when they are off duty, and cannot take guns home or wear them when off duty.

However, Biden’s measure is not a long-term solution. The policy changes proposed by Biden’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) could easily be reversed by a future president. Therefore, this measure is hardly a permanent policy for DACA recipients employed as police officers. Furthermore, there is no guarantee that the ATF’s policy is constitutional.

The move also seems utopian in that it hopes that DACA recipients who are in the U.S. illegally will be placed on the same footing as those enforcing the law.

Seattle’s hiring plan also seems like a good example of social engineering: The city is already under scrutiny for arguing that its police department needs to be more “diverse” and less white and veteran.

“I think it’s important to be mindful of what’s going on in the city,” said Ben Dalghetti, a strategist for Mayor Bruce Harrell’s office. Note According to KTTH Radio reporter Jason Lantz, a policy meeting was held in 2023 titled “SPD Marketing Diversity and Underrepresentation,” in which “underrepresentation” was defined as fewer whites and “overrepresentation” as more minority representation. City Hall rushed to “adjust” the policy debate in response to the backlash, but the damage had already been done.

Seattle is not the first city to consider this plan, and Washington state is not the only state that allows cities to hire foreign nationals for law enforcement positions. Illinois, Colorado, and California have all done so, according to NewsNation. passed it Each state has its own employment law, and Wisconsin and New Jersey are considering similar legislation.
