Seattle Becomes Hub of Patriotism Amid USMNT Victory
SEATTLE — On a sunny Friday afternoon, an enthusiastic crowd of 66,925 filled Lumen Field, their red, white, and blue gear creating a vibrant sea of color.
The stadium felt like the temporary heart of the nation.
Australian fans also made their presence known in gold and green, but the day undoubtedly belonged to the United States. From the stirring notes of the national anthem to the heartfelt sing-along of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” at the end, the atmosphere was electric.
As the anthem played, the roar of four Black Hawk helicopters overhead added to the drama, shaking the stadium’s structure. A fan clad in a giant bald eagle costume drew cheers, balancing on a friend’s shoulders, as thousands harmonized together.
This scene encapsulated the quintessential American sports experience, blending patriotism, spectacle, and a touch of whimsy.
And the energy remained palpable for the next 90 minutes.
Fans joined in as the game’s unofficial soundtrack filled the stadium. Early on, AC/DC’s music pumped through the speakers, a funny twist considering the band’s Australian roots.
Then, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” added to the fervor, and during a hydration break in the second half, Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” had tens of thousands singing along. It was an appropriate anthem; after all, the U.S. was certainly making progress.
Striker Folarin Balogun described the atmosphere as “special. Very special.” He added, “It’s hard to put into words. It gave us the extra motivation we needed.”
As the final whistle blew, John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” echoed through the stadium, marking the U.S.’s 2-0 triumph and qualification for the finals.
But soon, the music was swallowed by the crowd’s collective voice.
It transformed into a choir of supporters—the speakers almost unnecessary.
Tim Ream, the team captain, humorously noted, “I don’t think half the team knows that song. It was really amazing. It felt surreal.”
While the victory was significant, it’s the unforgettable atmosphere that many will likely cherish for years to come.
