Tragic Death of Alabama Athlete Eliud Kipsang
Eliud Kipsang, a former standout athlete from Alabama, has passed away at the young age of 28, just days after experiencing cardiac arrest, as reported by the university. Born in Kenya, Kipsang had made significant contributions to the Alabama program.
According to a GoFundMe campaign established for his family, Kipsang suffered a cardiac arrest on June 6. He was subsequently admitted to the intensive care unit at Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, Washington, where he sadly died just days later.
Coach Dan Waters expressed his sorrow in a statement, saying, “We are heartbroken with the passing of one of the most talented athletes ever wearing Crimson and White.” He emphasized that Kipsang’s influence went far beyond mere records and championships, noting him as a cherished teammate and friend. It’s tough, honestly—a huge loss for the running community.
Kipsang won gold medals at both the 2021 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championship and the SEC Cross Country Championship in the men’s 1,500 meters. That same year, he was also recognized as the “Runner of the Year.” The following season saw him breaking the college record in the 1,500 meters, a remarkable 3:33.74, which is still standing five college days later.
In total, Kipsang holds three program records for indoor and outdoor events, along with six top 10 all-time best performances in Alabama’s history. His achievements are nothing short of impressive, though it’s just sad to think about his promising future cut short.
