The SEC has made a definitive stance: once an athlete turns pro, they cannot return. In a recent meeting involving league presidents, athletic directors, and chancellors, the prominent collegiate conference established a rule that forbids any athlete who has declared for professional basketball or football from rejoining their programs.
This policy passed unanimously with a vote of 16-0, as reported. The SEC stipulates that it will not allow athletes on its rosters if they meet any of the following criteria:
- They have declared for the NFL, NBA, or WNBA draft without properly withdrawing.
- They have signed a contract with any professional football league, NBA/G-League, or WNBA team.
- They have been listed on a roster for any professional football league, NBA/G-League, or WNBA team.
The SEC’s announcement also noted that Commissioner Greg Sankey is empowered to enforce this rule and impose penalties on member institutions that fail to comply.
Details regarding potential sanctions for universities remain vague at this point, although an SEC spokesperson indicated that consequences will be clarified soon.
According to the SEC, the transitions between college and professional levels can “blur the line” between the two. They emphasized that “college sports are for college athletes” and highlighted the importance of advancing the Protect College Sports Act to address existing confusion around national eligibility standards.
This significant ruling from the SEC comes shortly after the Big Ten revealed their intention to implement similar measures, preventing member schools from allowing players who have participated in the NFL back into college football. Like the SEC, their rule states that a player cannot compete for a member school if they have declared for the draft, failed to withdraw, appeared on an NFL roster, or signed a contract with a pro league.
Additionally, reports suggest that the ACC and Big 12 are not far behind in drafting their own regulations.
However, not everyone in college football agrees with these decisions. Lane Kiffin, head coach of LSU, has defended his recruitment of former NFL players like Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. He pointed out that they made choices to recruit talented players amid various injunctions affecting eligibility and transfer rules, stating, “At the end of the day, because of these rulings, they’re either going to play for you or they’re going to play somewhere else around the country.” He believes many schools are in similar positions right now.
