Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that 83% of the USAID program will be cancelled after the end of Elon Musk's six-week review by Government Efficiency (DOGE).
A total of 5,200 contracts have ended, Rubio wrote early Monday morning. I'll post it on x We are announcing new reforms. He said the cancelled contract reached “thousands of billions of dollars” in US national interest or in a way that would not cause harm.
Rubio added that the remaining 18% (1,000 proximity) of the USAID program is now administered by the State Department. The move to transfer that authority came in consultation with Congress, he said.

In his Monday morning post, Rubio also thanked Doge and the “hard worker staff who spent so much time achieving this late historical reform.” Musk responded to the post, adding that “it's good to work with you,” and called the work “it's tough.”
“The important part of USAID should have always been in the national department,” Musk wrote.
The pair reportedly got caught up in a fierce exchange last week during a meeting with President Donald Trump's cabinet officials, including Musk, about whether Rubio is doing enough to carry out the cuts at USAID. According to the New York Times, Trump reportedly defended Rubio during his spat, screaming for being “a great job” in such a demanding, high-pressure position. Trump later wrote about social social that the two “have a great relationship.”

USAID was Trump's early target. Hours after taking office, Trump ordered a 90-day suspension for all US foreign aid programs that have pending reviews to secure these programs in line with American interests. Musk is also at the forefront of criticism of agents, claiming it “beyond repairs,” and likens agents' spending on illegal money laundering for left-wing nonprofits.

As the Trump administration tried to dismantle USAID, many lawsuits attempting to stop its actions have collapsed. The Supreme Court issued an emergency ruling last week, refusing to suspend a judge's order instructing the Trump administration to resume payments of $2 billion in foreign aid to other countries through existing contracts.
Fox News Digital reached out to the State Department for comment but did not immediately respond.
