California has the strictest gun laws of any state in the U.S., including universal background checks, red flag laws, a 10-day waiting period for gun purchases, firearms registration requirements, an “assault weapons” ban, a ban on concealed carry for self-defense on college campuses, a ban on primary and secondary school teachers being allowed to carry arms for self-defense, limits on the number of guns a law-abiding citizen can purchase in any given month, and ammunition restrictions.
Despite these gun restrictions, California led the nation in “active shooter” incidents in 2021.
