Secretary Marco Rubio Discusses 'America First' Foreign Policy: 'Practical Thinking,' 'Putting America's Interests First'

Rubio Defends America First Foreign Policy

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed strong support for the America First foreign policy in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, asserting that critics are misguided.

“Some critics in the media—though not this outlet—often view the term ‘America First’ as something negative,” Rubio stated when asked to explain the policy’s meaning. “But let me ask this: How many candidates would actually get elected if they campaigned on the idea of putting America second, or third, or even last? If they oppose America First, they should have the courage to tell people they want a foreign policy that prioritizes America last.”

He elaborated, “Nobody does that because, fundamentally, there’s an understanding that our foreign policy—as far as I can speak—must focus on what benefits America. I believe every nation should act in its own interest, and foreign relations help navigate the complexities.”

This response came during a longer discussion recorded at the State Department, where Rubio referenced President Donald Trump’s address to the United Nations General Assembly. The president emphasized leveraging American power to further U.S. interests.

“The president is essentially advocating for common sense, meaning our foreign policy and actions worldwide will be driven by what serves America’s interests,” Rubio explained. “We contend that what’s best for America is often in alignment with our allies’ needs. When our interests diverge, we’ll rely on diplomacy to address those differences.”

“Ultimately, America First is just common sense,” he reinforced.

Rubio also argued that using American power for U.S. interests not only benefits America but also uplifts allies globally. He acknowledged that while the America First approach might “offend” some establishment figures, their vision could potentially relegate the U.S. to a “middle power” status instead of maintaining its superpower position.

“This is the reality,” Rubio stated. “The president is asserting that as a nation—with the largest economy, the strongest military, and the most influential culture—we will utilize all aspects of American power to advance U.S. interests. We believe this also benefits our allies and the global community at large.”

“We’ll prioritize America first, whether it’s in discussions at the UN or in regards to global interactions,” he continued. “We’re not opposed to global structures; we just won’t place them above American interests. That’s the president’s stance, and it does irritate many in think tanks and editorial circles.”

“Had we listened to those voices, America would now find itself as a middle power,” Rubio concluded.
