In the wake of a tragic shooting outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, law enforcement agencies nationwide are ramping up security measures.
Two individuals, identified as Sarah Milgrim and Jaron Lisinski, were fatally shot by male suspects after they left a reception hosted by the American Jewish Commission for young diplomats.
The New York Police Department announced, “Although there’s no direct connection to NYC, we are heightening our presence at religious and cultural sites in response to this horrific attack targeting Jews and Israelis. This will include visual patrols, heavily armed units, and counter-terrorism officers.” Following this, other agencies announced similar safety enhancements.
For instance, in Miami-Dade County, officials stated, “Given the alarming acts of hatred and violence in Washington, we are taking immediate action to bolster safety measures. This includes increasing patrols around significant worship and cultural centers, such as synagogues and mosques.” They also urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity. The police chief emphasized that the community’s safety remains a top priority.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the situation by stating that military security operations would be escalated globally. He expressed deep sorrow for the families impacted by this tragic loss, labeling the act as a manifestation of increasing anti-Semitism. Netanyahu pledged to enhance protective agreements for Israeli missions worldwide and reinforce security for envoys in every country.
During the incident, the assailant attempted to enter a museum afterward and was later apprehended. After being arrested, he reportedly shouted, “Free, free Palestine,” according to Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith.
She confirmed that the suspect is now in custody and no longer poses a risk to the community.
Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter shared that one of the victims was a young couple who were engaged. Lisinski had planned to propose in Jerusalem the following week, having already purchased an engagement ring.
