A University of Chicago female student successfully thwarts an armed robbery. Courageous act caught on surveillance video.
Just before 3 p.m. Wednesday, the student was seen on video returning to her apartment when she was confronted by a man who appeared to point a gun at her.
The student, who identified herself only as Maddie, spoke to WLS-TV about the incident.
“I was walking home from class when I saw a man wearing a mask approach me,” she recalled. “And then he came towards me and I said to myself, ‘Keep walking.’ But then we got into an argument.”
She appears to be asking other students for help, but one student, sitting a few feet away, simply continues to watch the struggle.
That’s when the student grabbed a gun.
“I can pick up a gun, remove the magazine from the gun and throw it into the bushes,” she said.
The attacker turned towards her, but she was able to escape. A short time later, he returned in a dark-colored sedan and attempted to retrieve the magazine for his gun. He and his driver were able to escape.
Maddy says she wouldn’t recommend what she did to others.
“I definitely think a fight has started, but I am in no way advocating resisting armed robbery,” she continued. “Looking back, I don’t think it was really the right decision.”
Police said there were other robberies on the same day as Maddie’s robbery. She just wants them caught.
“I don’t blame the campus…I don’t blame the bystanders…I don’t blame the police…they did a great job,” Maddy concluded. “I think we just need to find the person who did this attack, because they will do it again.”
Students told WLS that crimes against students seem to be increasing on campus.
“Normally, that doesn’t happen on campus,” said third-year student Michelle Angelo Pagán. “This also happens to people walking back to their off-campus apartments. So the fact that campuses are moving closer and closer to student centers is very concerning.”
Police said they were searching for the suspect and would increase patrols in the area.
Video of the attack is below.
