A 60-year-old man who conquered cancer through his strong faith is now considered the oldest college football player in America.
Tom Green is gearing up to play with the team at McDaniel College in Maryland, and his remarkable journey encourages others to embrace life fully, as reported by ABC News 4.
Green, who owns Northeast Custom Pallets in Pennsylvania, couldn’t pursue college in his youth and has encountered numerous life challenges.
In 2015, he was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer. In a blog post for the Kidney Cancer Association, he shared that his faith was deeply challenged upon receiving this diagnosis.
“Before 2008, I was recognized for my wealth and strength. I was a successful land developer, admired by many—or, at least, respected for my accomplishments. But a financial crisis led to bankruptcy and a career shift. Those years were incredibly tough and tested my faith, especially following my mother’s battle with cancer, which I found reminiscent of the biblical figure Job, who lost everything,” he reflected.
Despite the exhausting treatments, Green noted a spiritual transformation as his wife and friends prayed for him.
“Eventually, my pastor told me that when Job forgave his friend, God returned everything he lost, implying Job was restored,” Green recounted.
Thanks to ongoing treatment, Green’s cancer eventually went into remission. He recalls his doctor telling him, “You need to leave the hospital and don’t come back. I’ve never seen a case like yours. You’re a miracle. I truly believe in the God of miracles; hope was always present.”
Currently, Green is enjoying his time as a defenseman playing alongside teammates who are significantly younger.
“The laughter is my favorite part. We just laugh together; they’re young and full of energy, and I love joining in,” he shared.
Green mentioned, “Playing college football has been a longtime dream of mine.” He reflected on his milestone birthday, stating, “I turned 60, so I thought, ‘Why not?’ I don’t just want to be the oldest player on the field. I want to excel.”
