See: Angels pitcher Brent Suter and Rays players removed for anthem standoff

Unexpected Ejections Before First Pitch

During Saturday’s MLB game in St. Petersburg, Florida, three players were unexpectedly ejected before the game even began. The Angels’ relief pitcher, Brent Suter, and Tampa Bay pitchers Steven Wilson and Manuel Rodriguez found themselves in a rare situation that drew attention even before the first pitch.

After the national anthem, Suter chose to remain on the field, standing alongside Wilson and Rodriguez, who also stayed put. This unusual standoff was further emphasized by the presence of two Tampa Bay mascots who joined them. It all unfolded right near the dugouts, almost as if the players were part of an impromptu protest or a playful challenge.

While Angels leadoff hitter Zach Neto stood ready in the batter’s box, awaiting the first pitch from Rays pitcher Drew Rasmussen, referee Lance Barrett stepped in, deciding the spectacle had gone on long enough and ejected the players.

Suter likely wasn’t available to pitch that day, having played just the day before, while the Rays had suffered injuries throughout the season that kept their pitchers sidelined. The Angels were heading into the day with one of their worst records of the season, sitting at 23-36.

This bizarre scene definitely raised eyebrows and left everyone mentioning it long after the game started.
